Sequential
Oral Sensory Feeding Approach | (S.O.S.)
This is an approach to help children who
have difficulty eating a variety of foods.
It was developed by a psychologist named
Kay Toomey, PhD. It works to dispel several
myths about eating difficulties, increase
understanding and awareness of the prerequisites
to good eating, and help guide children
and families along a developmental continuum
of eating.
Relationship
Development Intervention (RDI)
This is an approach that is based in neurological
research. The focus is on improving the
core elements of the autism spectrum disorder.
It focuses on remediation, as opposed to
many programs which focus on compensation.
Intervention is primarily provided through
parents, with therapist guiding them through
each phase.
The
core elements:
Loss
of motivation for challenge, discovery
and novelty
 Limited
appraisal (checking and rechecking for information,
distinguishing minor/major changes, understanding
relative comparisons)
 Limited
interpersonal competence and experience
sharing
 Limited
past and future access due to poor episodic
memory development
 Poor
self awareness on many levels
 Inflexible
thinking and poor creativity for problem-solving
Kris Worrell, OTR/L has completed
her certification and is taking new patients

Animal-Assisted
Therapy
Functional Kids Clinic has a therapy dog
that comes to work with the children most
Fridays. Her name is Ella and she helps
the kids by following directions to do tricks,
letting them read her body language and
take care of her, and by demonstrating activities
or doing them with kids who need encouragement.
She visits both speech and OT sessions.
